How do we train up a child the way he or she should go, when we don’t even know the way we should go sometimes?
When my kids were little I wanted to be a godly mom but I was too busy to sit down long enough to read the Bible or pray. I would go to bed at night exhausted and fall asleep in the first couple of sentences while talking to God.
Many times we want to change, but we don’t really know how. Life is chaotic and busy especially when raising little ones. We tend to forget about what is going on around us and we live in our own little world.
My world looked something like this:
The alarm clock would go off way too early in the morning and I would crawl out of the bed, shower and dress for work. Then I would wake, dress and feed the kids to get them ready for school and out the door we would go.
Oops . . . no time for God but I would think, “I will pray on the way to work.” Then upon getting to work the hustle and bustle of the day would keep me busy. Before I knew, it was time to go home.
Remembering my son has baseball that night I would have to hurry and stop by the store to pick up something for dinner. There was very little time to cook and do homework, but we would get it done. Out the door once again and off to the game.
We were always late getting home and I would rush to get the kids in the bath. Trying to get the kids to hurry and barely having time to speak to my hubby I would stress and feel the guilt of being a terrible wife AND mother. Then we would have a debate (or sometimes a screaming match) while washing and drying hair.
Snacks and drinks before finally tucking the kids in the bed and saying prayers would bring a sweet end to the day.
WHEW! I was tired and ready to go to bed myself.
Ah man . . . I can’t forget I have that mound of laundry to do and dishes in the sink that have to be done.
By the end of a normal work day we are exhausted and we go to bed, just so we can get up early in the morning and do the same thing over again.
Oops! No time for God again but I think I will pray when I lay down. As we are praying . . . we once again fall asleep.
This was my little world for many years. I loved it and would do it all again in a heartbeat!
When trying to live a godly life while raising our children, we need to ask God if we see the world the way He does.
The answer is clearly, “no.” We are very unstable people. One minute we are on “fire for God” and the next minute we have one foot in the world. Our world!
Parenting and all that’s involved is important. You may be where I was twenty years ago currently in your own life. You want to be a godly mom or dad, you want to read your Bible and pray but you just run out of hours due to exhaustion or choice.
As I look back, it was not until I made a commitment to God that I would not go to bed no matter how tired I was until I had opened my Bible and spent some time with Him on my knees praying! That’s what changed my life and my world!
My world changed during these years.
I stopped praying “God help me” and started praying “God use me.”
My world became less about me and
started become more about Christ and others.
I still pray this prayer and I see so many opportunities to serve Him and love on others! There is so much to be done in this world we live in to help others who are hurting, and to be the hands and feet of Christ!
But it is not until we “get out of your own little world” and get into God’s BIG WORLD that we find the satisfying life of being a follower of Christ!
Maybe we have a happy little family and we get up everyday and do the same thing day after day. But something is still missing. That something missing is Jesus. He desires to be with you and speak to you. He wants to hear your prayers.
Ask God…to help you see the world in the way He does!
”Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do. (James 1:5, 6, 8 NLT)
