It depends on what you’re choosing. We make choices every day and many days without much thought or time. My daughter owns a girly-girl store in South Carolina called Palmetto Twist-Spartanburg and I love to shop there. The last time I was in there I was looking for a new fall pocketbook knowing fall is right around the corner. BIG praise. I look forward to cooler temperatures. Anyway . . . I loved the new pewter color so I chose it and THEN I saw the navy blue in the same pocketbook and, needing a blue purse, I decided to grab it too.
Have you ever done that?
Recently I was in Stein Mart and they had a cute shirt I liked. I got the same shirt in pink, blue and white. The price was right. I have done this more than once.
When we started this month’s series at #AskGodToday and were going to choose a Psalm to write about, I couldn’t choose just one. I have been trying to choose for at least four weeks, without resolve. So I decided like I have done in the past while shopping that I will just choose several.
Kaitlyn led the series off with Psalm 91:1-16 NLT and De Anna shared Psalm 18 The Message. We have Psalm 145 coming soon, along with a couple of new special people who will be sharing their hearts through the Psalms.
Today, let’s break down a few beautiful messages through the Book of Psalms that God has laid on my heart.
When I read the Psalms while doing my quiet time it just reminds me of how being human has not and won’t change. We may all live in different generations and centuries but we have been created in the same image, the image of our Creator. We are born with emotions, thoughts, feelings, desires, needs, personalities, sin, compassions and more. These help make us who we are.
When we let God mold us into His likeness, He develops us based on our beliefs. If we let God lead us, our character will follow His lead. In other words, our God-led emotions will be more of joy, love and self-control, where if we choose not to follow Christ we will be more prone to being led by the emotions of self-centeredness, anger and hate. This has been going on since God created Adam and Eve. People are people.
The Psalms were written by people who had the same thoughts and emotions that we do. I think that is why we can connect with this book. It makes us feel we are not alone, we aren’t really crazy for thinking the way we do, and God really does hear us even when He seems silent.
God knows us!
“You have searched me, Lord,
and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue
you, Lord, know it completely.
You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.”
God creates us!
“For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
How precious to me are your thoughts, God!
How vast is the sum of them!”
God satisfies us!
“Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love,
that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.
Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,
for as many years as we have seen trouble.”
God leads us!
“Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.”
God favors us!
“May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us;
establish the work of our hands for us—
yes, establish the work of our hands.”
God hears us!
“The Lord hears his people when they call to him for help.
He rescues them from all their troubles.”
God comforts us!
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted,
He rescues those whose spirits are crushed.”
God rescues us!
“The righteous person faces many troubles,
but the Lord comes to the rescue each time.”
God redeems us!
“But the Lord will redeem those who serve Him.
No one who takes refuge in Him will be condemned.”
God forgives us!
“He forgives all my sins . . .
God heals us!
“and heals all my diseases.”
God loves us!
“The Lord is merciful and loving,
slow to become angry and full of constant love.”
I could go on and on and share verse after verse. I have to choose to stop somewhere. Just like I can’t buy EVERY shirt or pocketbook, I can’t choose every verse.
I hope you will take a few minutes, go to your Bible and find these verses and underline them for your future. When times get hard, and they will, and it looks like God is not listening, go to the Psalms and choose several to lift you up!
