Children, aren’t they the greatest!
Having been a parent now for thirty-three years, I can truly attest to the depth of love that exists in this relationship. Everything we did was with our son as he was growing up, and, oh, how my heart would ache when we would try to go to a place as a family outing and discover that children were not welcome! We would be accepted gladly, but not our child. Needless to say, we didn’t go back. We figured if our son wasn’t wanted, neither were we! Love me, love my child.
The same goes for our relationship with God. In 1 John chapter 5, John writes that to show love to God, we must also love Jesus, His son.
Verse one says:
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well.
In essence God is saying:
That pretty much sums it up, doesn’t it?
Now this may raise some questions in your hearts, like:
- What do you mean, born of god?
A new believer is born of God through His spirit coming into him the very moment he believes and trusts Him with his life. In other words, he becomes one of His children, like being adopted. This is the method of salvation. And it is simply by FAITH, trusting in who Jesus is and what He did. There had to be the perfect sacrifice. So God provided it: His own Son in a virgin birth so as to be sinless.
- How do I know if I am born again?
Is there a certain feeling I am supposed to experience? Well, not necessarily. Some people do feel different. When I was born again I couldn’t stop smiling! I knew I had found the truth.
Being born again has nothing to do with going to church or adhering to a religion. The best way to determine if you are born again is love. See, when you trust in Christ as Savior, God the Father becomes your Heavenly father. You will love Him as father because He has begotten you by the Spirit. This love for Him will well up inside you and spill out into your life. You will be changed from the inside out. Your whole perspective about yourself and others will change. Peace will reign in your heart even when there is no peace around you.
And it doesn’t stop there. . .
The love of God which is now in you not only loves God, but others begotten of Him. (1 John 5:2a) They are your spiritual brothers and sisters. Even the Lord Jesus said, “By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one to another.” (John 13:35)
You will also obey the commands of Jesus. (1 John 5:2b)
Jesus’ commands were founded in love. This is why they are not grievous or burdensome.
John 13:34 says:
- How do I show love to God’s son, Jesus?
A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
All this because of God’s love for you.
God has put this love in our hearts for others.
It truly is a wonderful thing!
So, Happy Valentine’s Day! And don’t forget to show the Love!
God’s love draws others to faith in Jesus. Do you know about the love of God and Jesus?
Have you been born again?
If so, please share with us in the comments how God has transformed you. I love hearing your stories.
If not, please listen to God calling you and accept this gift of salvation offered through Jesus Christ just for you!
