It’s the beginning of a New Year. For many of us opening a new calendar is like starting the year over with a clean slate. We make decisions everyday on how we are going to spend our time. We decide what goals we want to set in the new year and what activities we want to participate in.

Some goals and resolutions we will be diligent to keep while others will sadly go by the wayside. Overwhelmed, it is easy to give up altogether.

While many of these decisions are important, many will not necessarily hurt us to put off for later. However there is one very important decision we must make this year that is life changing.

“…choose this day whom you will serve…” (Joshua 24:15 ESV)

We have to choose. There really is no straddling the fence. We are either on God’s side or not. He gives us the choice.

earth-1013749_640-pixabay“Then said Jesus unto his disciples, ‘If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.

For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?'” (Matthew 16:24-26 KJV)

It’s time to evaluate what we are putting in the way of loving the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. (Mark 12:30)

“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” (Matthew 6:24 ESV)

Money.

Are we letting the pursuit of riches come between us and God?

Let us not make the same choice as the rich young ruler that would not give up his riches to follow Jesus. (Luke 18:18-27)

Friends

fire-784642_640Are we more concerned about what our friends might think about us than what God thinks?

“. . . know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.” (James 4:4 KJV)

We should be witnessing to our friends and sharing the Good News with them. Can our friends see Jesus in us?

We should be a good influence to our friends and not let them influence us to do what is wrong.

Family

Do we have family that’s not following God? We must also set them an example and do everything we can to win them to Christ. (1 Corinthians 7:16)

“Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” (Matthew 10:37-39 ESV)

Ourselves

Do we put our own selfish desires before God?

“. . .God resists the proud, and gives grace to the humble.” (1 Peter 5:5b)

If we humble ourselves like little children, we shall be among the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven. (Matthew 18:4)

The Good News

The good news is, if we choose to follow Christ, He will give us the desires of our heart. (Psalm 37:4)

When God gave King Solomon the opportunity to ask for anything, Solomon chose wisdom to rule God’s people. God rewarded Solomon for making a good choice by also giving him wealth and honor. (1 Kings 3:13)

God promises the same for us.

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33 ESV)

God wants us to decide right now who we will serve.

“For He says: ‘In an acceptable time I have heard you, And in the day of salvation I have helped you.’ Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” – (2 Corinthians 6:2 NKJV)

Let us choose like Joshua, “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15)
