As you and I head into a brand new year, my mind starts dancing and twirling around anticipating what a new year might bring with it. Eagerly, we can prepare with excitement for a new and fresh beginning, or our circumstances may dishearten us into believing it’s only going to get worse.
As a follower of Christ, I know that God is always beginning new things in our lives. In Jeremiah 29 God says, He already “knows the plans,” the new plans He has for us. He continues to say that He has plans to “give us a future.”
As I reflect on 2015, I think of the heart diagnosis I received, plus how I had a rough ending to the year.
Because of my illness I could ask, “Why, God?” I don’t want to be sick.
See, I have good plans for next year. I have plans for a hope and a future far greater than I can ever imagine, because that’s what I believe God has always told me since I fell in love with Him.
The scripture says God has plans for me, and I turned it around to say I have plans for me. I think we do that quite often. We make the plans and then want God to bless them. We think they are good and even “God-type” plans. We believe God will be proud of us and He will like what we are doing, so why wouldn’t He bless it?
However, our plans might be different from God’s.
When ending the year while going through a trial or storm, you may go into the next year a little fearful that the storm will continue.
Perhaps you’re feeling unsure of your future plans. You can’t find your passion or direction, and you’re not clear on why you can’t seem to get motivated.
Here are six effective tips to improve your life:
1. Discover your purpose.
There always must be a reason or purpose for why you are doing what you are doing. It can’t be “just because.” Have you ever tried to discover your life’s purpose? When you’re asked what that is, can you answer the question? Many times we have to dig deeper into the “what and why” questions, such as:
- What is your purpose?
- What do you desire to do with your life?
- Why do you do what you are doing?
- Why is this important?
- What do you want to accomplish?
- What do you need to quit doing?
2. Take a step and do something you are passionate about.
What stirs you deep down inside, about which you will not be satisfied until you tell others?
Passion is an “intense emotion, a compelling enthusiasm or desire for something.” Passion is born out of a positive or a negative circumstance. Many times we are broken due to a life event or incident that redirects us to the path our life was meant to take. It changes us. It wrecks us. It can disturb us to the core of our being. It moves us to action. This occurrence creates fervency, a desire to help someone, create something, or change the suffering in the world. Your enthusiasm to make a difference can be channeled through your words and actions.
3. Make plans and set goals.
Do you have a plan for how to improve your life? Without a plan, our passion and purpose are only in our minds. We need to develop a plan of action and write it down. A plan is similar to a goal.
4. Give to others.
When you let go and give away, you can count on a blessing coming your way. What do you have that you can give away in the service of your family, your friends, your neighbors, the church, or some other capacity?
5. Get healthy.
I am definitely speaking to myself here. We only have one life to live and we must try to live it well. That includes taking care of ourselves physically. We can do this by eating healthy, exercising, and getting enough rest.
6. Submit to God.
When I look back over the years of my life, I have one major regret. I waited too long before I asked Christ into my life to be my Savior. I rejected Jesus when I was 13 and it wasn’t until I was 34 that I submitted my life to Him. If I had only known then what I know now, I would never have waited so long. I bet I would have made better choices, which would have definitely improved my life.
I thought being a Christian would be dull and boring, and I didn’t want to give up my party life. I am never bored, nor is my life gloomy or dull. Jesus brought joy to my life and gave me a purpose and passion that has not only improved my life, but given me eternal life.
It’s a new day, a new month and a new year!
My challenge to you this year is to focus on these six tips to improve the one and only life God has chosen to give you. Discover your purpose so you may passionately pursue God’s plans for you. In those plans I hope you will give away, get and stay healthy, and most of all, submit everything to God.
Remember, we have to make sure that our plans are not just ours, but God’s plans for us. His plans are always perfect.
Happy New Year and blessings always!
