There are many ways we learn lessons:
from our parents, teachers, peers, friends, and situations. They can be about anything from cooking to relationships.
Then there are those lessons that send us to our knees in humble respect and awe, for we know they have been sent directly from God through His Holy Spirit. These have an impact on how we live the rest of our lives.
The following accounts are not my experiences, but those of a friend and mentor. The way she lives close to Christ truly encourages me. She has given me permission to share with you.
Lesson #1: Heed my warnings.
Thirty years ago, when my friend was a young married woman and a fairly new Christian, she wanted to purchase some blinds for her home. After finding a place and ordering what she wanted, my friend was instructed to pay for them in advance. ($100.00) She promptly wrote the check and left. However, on the way to her car she was warned by what seemed like a “voice inside her head” to go back and get the check. This had never happened to her before, so she dismissed it as her own suspiciousness and went on her way.
Days and weeks went by with no blinds arriving. So she went back to the store and found that it had closed. Now her hard earned-money was gone! If only she had turned around and retrieved her check.
What she had dismissed was really the prompting of God’s Holy Spirit within her. He is within each Christian to guide and direct. Isaiah 30:21
What an expensive lesson to learn!
Lesson #2: Pray NOW!
Another time my friend was awoken from sleep with her sister on her mind. She felt a distinct urging to pray for her which she did. She later found out that her sister did indeed need prayer, for she’d had an intruder in her apartment that night!
Have you ever woke up with someone on your mind? Pray for them. They need it!
Lesson #3: Share those requests.
My friend had now learned to listen for the voice of God in the depth of her soul. So, when asked in a bible study for a prayer request, she shared what she had previously kept to herself about her daughter who had been giving her problems and had run away. This had been troubling my friend and she just felt she had to share it that night. Little did she know that her daughter had overdosed and was in trouble! She needed those prayers right then and God knew!
Don’t be afraid to share your prayer needs with others. Sometimes we keep silent out of embarrassment or fear of ridicule. This is just Satan’s tool. Besides, any Christian worth their salt will take a request of prayer seriously.
Many times God, through His Holy Spirit, will direct us to do or say something out of the ordinary. This may make us wonder if it’s really Him.
Author and speaker Beth Moore has a “checklist” for listening to God’s nudging. One of its points is- if it is something you can’t know any other way, it is the prompting of the Holy Spirit. Don’t dismiss it. Listen to His voice.
What a privilege to serve a God who is so willing to be involved in our lives!
