With every beat of our heart, we are given the choice to experience gratitude. Yet many times we choose the ungrateful beat instead, whining and complaining about our circumstances and surroundings. We may have had a bad day, or yelled at our kids or spouse, and we mope around feeling sorry for ourselves.
We have a grouchy heart.
It doesn’t sound nice, does it? So why do we let the world defeat us?
Now picture a heart beating for Jesus. It’s a big heart, full of love and gratitude. It sings, “Because I’m happy. . .” It’s a playful heart that tells others of the good things God has done and is doing in its life. It’s a bouncy heart that bounces to its neighbors, family and friends the goodness and faithfulness of God.
The heart beating for Jesus is a blessed heart that loves other people with the love God has given it. The beauty of Jesus shines in this heart.
I want a heart like that!
How can we have the Jesus-beating heart instead of the defeated, grouchy heart?
“Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.” (Colossians 3:16)
To dwell is to reside, to live, to be settled or abide in. When we allow Jesus to live within our heart, He teaches and corrects us through His wisdom. Let Jesus sing over you the “songs of the Spirit.”
Visualize the Prince of Peace, Jesus, singing over you today. If we can keep our eyes on Jesus and the beautiful words He is singing, when that grouchy, ugly heart tries to raise its head we can tell it, “Away from me, I am a child of the King!” But if we allow it to dwell in us, we will always be thinking about the things we don’t have, or can’t do, or believing the lies from Satan that we aren’t good enough.
So, sweet friends, let’s all pray that Jesus Christ will dwell in and among us. Even when things don’t look like you would like them to, you can rest assured that God is trying to teach you something and this too shall pass.
He forgives, He forgets, and He forever loves you.
