The Love Tree
by Ann Cooke
One of our favorite vacation spots is St. Augustine, Florida, the oldest city in America and one that is steeped in history. We love the beaches there and especially love the Old Town shops. And of course the food!! Our first year there we stumbled on this marvel of nature, the Love Tree. The Love Tree is actually two trees; a Sable Palm growing out of the heart of an Oak. Legend has it that if you kiss your love under the tree your bond of love will be everlasting. Needless to say there were quite a number of couples waiting in line to test this legend. And of course we joined them! Who doesn’t want everlasting love?
I couldn’t help but think of how this tree relates to the love that God has for us. Let’s look for a moment at a few observations.
The Love Tree is two trees in one. This is much like the institution of marriage. Marriage is a wonderful gift of God. In marriage two people become one in the sight of God. (Matthew 19:6). This is a wonderful thought isn’t it? The love between man and wife is a bond so strong and mysterious that only the two of them share. Aristotle said it beautifully; “Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies.”
Notice how one tree envelopes the other. This reminds me of how God’s love envelopes us. Romans 8:39 says, “nothing can separate us from the love of God.” This tree that envelopes does not choke the other one out, but to strengthen it. That, my friends, is exactly what God does for us! He wraps us in His love because He knows what we will encounter in this life. The knowledge of His loving arms wrapped around us strengthens us beyond measure. Many, if not all of us have experienced times when we really don’t know how we would have survived a situation if it hadn’t have been for God holding us up! What love He has for us!
Next, see how one tree takes a completely different path so that the other can grow straight and tall. This shows me how Jesus left the throne of Heaven to be bent over under the weight of the cross because of His love for you and me. Many think they would give their life for their children, spouse or friend, but who do you know that would give their only son for another person? God did! Yes, He gave His son Jesus to die for you and me! John 3:16 is the most quoted verse in the Bible. Do you know why? Perhaps it’s because it shows us the most pure love there is. A love for eternity!
My friends, only an everlasting God can give everlasting love which gives us everlasting life. Our quest for love on this earth can be daunting to say the least, but for Real Love seek Jesus. He loves you!
