My Earthly Example of God’s Love for Us

Sometimes as I’ve read through the scriptures over the years, I’ve pondered the depth and richness of God’s love. I’ve tried to be able to figure out a way to describe His love to others. Since I’m a very literal person, it has been hard for me to give it the best explanation I could.

Growing up, my family was not one to hug or say “I love you” very often. I assume my parents loved me, but I did not hear those words, nor get a warm fuzzy feeling from them with hugs. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t feel unloved. It just wasn’t something that was spoken about or shown in my home. So I had nothing to compare with the scriptures that speak of the Father’s love.

But there was someone in my life who always made me feel loved. Always. Always a hug. Always interested in my life. Always wanting me to visit. Always sad when I had to leave after a four-hour visit!

That person was my sweet Grandma M.

My grandma was the example of the scripture I read in John 13:34:

“…A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.”

My grandma cared for many family members in her home through the years. She raised three children of her own. She was the proud Mamaw to eight of us grandchildren. Never once did I ever, ever, hear my grandma complain about caring for or helping out anyone. If anyone would speak poorly of another, she would always jump in and say, “God tells us we are to love one another, dontcha know!”

As my grandma aged and eventually needed to be moved to a nursing facility at the age of 93, I saw her become sad as none of my relatives, except my mom, visited her. When I came by each week, she would run down the list of those still alive and ask how they were and why wouldn’t they stop by. I would always have to say, “I don’t know, Grandma.” And I did not know. This woman who gave the best godly example of unconditional love and acceptance, was just ignored. Yet she never gave up hope that someday they would come to visit.

Watching her steadfast love towards family members who were too busy for her reminds me of the love God has for us. We often get so busy with life that we forget, the One who is waiting for us to visit. He patiently waits for us to stop by, just for a bit. Always ready for the visit. Always happy to see us.

I was blessed to have my grandma with me for 50 years of my life. She left earth for heaven a month before her 100th birthday. It dawned on me years ago that my Grandma was a gift that God gave to me as a pure example of what He means when He says in Jeremiah 31:3:

“…I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore
I have continued my faithfulness to you.”

My hope for you is that you feel the love of God in your life. His love is everlasting.

Do you have an earthly example in your life that expresses the richness of the love of God in your life? Please let us know. We would love to hear your story. My prayer for you is that you do.
