Do you own any rubies? Do you have a ruby ring, or necklace? I don’t own any ruby stones but they are beautiful and are the vibrant color of red. It is the birthstone for July. I didn’t know much about rubies until I read a scripture again and thought I would see what I could find out about this precious stone.
“She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.” (Proverbs 3:15 NIV)
Precious Rubies of the Bible
Why are rubies so important and how are they so valuable? Rubies are first mentioned in the biblical times of Job, around 2000 BC and in the Proverbs. They are now considered one of the world’s most expensive gemstone. You can expect to pay about $15,000 and up per carat for a top quality ruby, larger than 1 carat. It is one of the most beautiful stones created by nature. Rubies are created from Corundum, which is a rock-forming mineral. Rubies have long been a symbol of wealth and power. Kings wore rubies in biblical times. The forming of rubies and sapphires is linked back to the times of the Flood in Noah’s day in the Bible. They were formed due to the earth’s movement during this period. Some interpret their formation, which was caused by the unique conditions of God’s judgement on the earth and the people, to be the reason the gemstones are so rare. Rubies have been known to serve as eternal reminder’s of God’s judgement, mercy and righteousness. I read where some even have said, the red fiery color of the ruby could also possibly represent the blood of Jesus!
So, knowing the history of the precious ruby stones helps us to understand why they were used in comparison to wisdom. Proverbs 8:11 says, “For wisdom is far more valuable than rubies. Nothing you desire can compare with it.” Job mentions rubies by saying the “price of wisdom is far above rubies.”
Wisdom From The Lord
How do we obtain wisdom?
Why is wisdom more valuable than one of the most precious stones in the world?
Why so important, God chose to mention in the Bible?
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. For through wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life.” (Proverbs 9:10, 11 NIV)
Wisdom is defined as “a deep understanding and realization of people, things, events or situations which results in the ability to discern wise actions”. It is different from knowledge, which is knowing the facts, information or skills about something. Knowledge is the beginning of wisdom, but you can have knowledge about the things of the Bible without wisdom.
A Few Benefits of Wisdom
1. Common Sense
We all know someone who needs more common sense, don’t we? Pass on the wisdom you receive from God! When we have the wisdom from God, He gives us common sense to approach our daily activities, choices and people. “He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest.” Prov 3:7
2. God’s Shield
In Proverbs 3:7 it also says, “He is a shield to those who walk with integrity.” When you walk in the wisdom from God you have God’s protection. He shields you from danger, even when you don’t even realize you are in danger sometimes.
What do you need God to shield you from today?
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for loving us Lord! I pray God you will shield us from the dangers of this world. I pray God we would seek to know you better. Place your Word in our hearts Lord and give us the desire to live for you!
In Jesus name,
More benefits will be continued tomorrow in Part II!
